Who ıs thıs syllabus for?

Is A-Level Chemistry Right for You?

✅ A-Level Chemistry is ideal for students who…
Are planning to study Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, Biochemistry or Natural Sciences at university
Want to develop genuine chemical understanding — mechanisms, thermodynamics, analytical reasoning
Are retaking to improve grades for competitive university applications
Seek a globally recognised, rigorous STEM qualification valued by top universities worldwide
Are prepared to engage consistently with past papers and mark scheme language
⚠️ A-Level Chemistry is not ideal for students who…
Are looking for a short-term, memorisation-based science course with minimal exam pressure
Do not need Chemistry for their intended university course or career path
Are not willing to engage with multi-step mathematical reasoning and complex organic mechanisms
Expect to coast on IGCSE-level knowledge — A-Level is a significant step up in depth and rigour

Practical Skills — What's Assessed and How

Both boards assess practical skills, but in very different ways. Understanding this early helps you plan your preparation correctly.

📘 Cambridge 9701 Practical
Paper 3 (AS): Planning, Analysis and Evaluation — 2 hours, written, 20% of AS
Paper 5 (A2): Advanced practical reasoning — 1h 15m, 12% of A Level
Paper 5 distinguishes A* students — requires experimental design and critical evaluation
No separate endorsement — practical skills are examined in the written papers
📗 Edexcel 9CH0 Practical Endorsement
Minimum 12 core practicals must be completed in school/college (16 recommended)
Reported as Pass / Not Classified — does not contribute to A*–E grade
Required to receive the full A-Level certificate — cannot be skipped
Paper 3 (written, 40%) includes synoptic practical reasoning questions
Frequently asked questions

A-Level Chemistry Syllabus — Most Common Questions

What are the main topics in A-Level Chemistry?

A-Level Chemistry covers: Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Energetics (including Hess's Law, Born-Haber cycles, Gibbs free energy), Kinetics, Chemical Equilibria, Acids and Bases, Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry (mechanisms, synthesis), Transition Metals, and Analytical Techniques (NMR, MS, IR). Topics vary slightly between Cambridge 9701 and Edexcel 9CH0 in ordering and depth. Full topic list →

What is the difference between Cambridge and Edexcel A-Level Chemistry?

Cambridge (9701) uses 5 exam papers including a dedicated practical paper (Paper 5) and separates AS and A2 more distinctly. Edexcel (9CH0) uses 3 papers with a separate Practical Endorsement (Pass/Fail). Cambridge tends toward deeper analytical questions; Edexcel has a more modular structure. Both are equally recognised by universities worldwide — the right choice depends on your school and study style.

Is A-Level Chemistry harder than IB Chemistry?

Neither is objectively harder. A-Level Chemistry offers fewer subjects studied in greater depth — organic mechanisms, thermodynamics and analytical chemistry reach a level not covered in IB. IB Chemistry HL has a broader scope with Internal Assessment requirements. Students who prefer focused depth typically find A-Level Chemistry the stronger preparation for university STEM courses.

Which A-Level Chemistry board is better for Medicine?

Both Cambridge 9701 and Edexcel 9CH0 are equally accepted by medical schools worldwide. Cambridge's Paper 5 and deep analytical question style can provide stronger university-level preparation. However, performing excellently on Edexcel is far more valuable than performing poorly on Cambridge. Board fit matters more than board prestige.

How many papers are there in A-Level Chemistry?

Cambridge 9701: 5 papers (Papers 1, 2, 3 for AS; Papers 4 and 5 for A2). Edexcel 9CH0: 3 written papers (Papers 1, 2, 3) plus the Practical Endorsement, which is assessed separately and does not contribute to the final grade.

Are practicals included in the A-Level Chemistry exam?

Yes, in both boards. Cambridge examines practical skills in Papers 3 and 5 (written papers that test practical reasoning). Edexcel assesses practicals through the Endorsement (school-assessed, Pass/Fail) and through Paper 3 which includes practical-based synoptic questions. The Edexcel Endorsement must be passed to receive the full qualification.

Can I get private tutoring for A-Level Chemistry?

Yes. Perga Education provides 1-to-1 A-Level Chemistry tuition for both Cambridge 9701 and Edexcel 9CH0, fully online. Every session uses real past papers and mark scheme language. A free 40-minute diagnostic lesson is available with no commitment. Book via WhatsApp →
